Our waters are under threat. Please ACT NOW to help stop the laws protecting our waters being weakened

Healthy water is fundamental to life and vital for nature, but we are facing the very real risk of seeing the laws protecting our waters weakened. The main legislation on water protection is currently under review in Europe. Some Member States would like to weaken standards and water down ambition, and no matter what the Brexit deal the UK is likely to follow suit.

The European Commission now wants you to have your say through its public consultation. This is your chance to tell them to keep our water law strong. If you want to #ProtectWater for humans, wildlife and our environment please ACT NOW to let the UK Government and the EU know water protections must not be watered down!

We must fight for these important water laws, they have driven most of the investment and effort we have seen in the UK in the last 15 years to improve our waters and they enshrine in law key environmental principles such as ‘the polluter pays’.

We have prepared the response that will best ensure the law is kept safe. To send this to the Commission on your behalf, please fill in your details and click ACT NOW.

What’s the problem?

60% of Europe’s rivers, streams, lakes and wetlands are not healthy, with just 14% of rivers in England classed as healthy. For generations we have destroyed and polluted them, and used too much water irresponsibly. If we continue in this way, it will affect everything - from small things in our day-to-day lives, to keeping entire industries going. It will also affect all the countless species that need these habitats to survive. The EU water law protects our water sources, but governments now want to weaken it.

Everyone has a part to play, but our governments are allowing rivers, lakes and wetlands to be exploited in ways that cause permanent harm, such as infrastructure disrupting our river ecosystems and unsustainable agricultural pollution. Through the EU water law, governments agreed to end this destruction - but, they have failed to live up to their promises, and, to make matters worse, they now want to weaken the law!

What’s the solution?

The Water Framework Directive has resulted in significant funding and much action to improve our water bodies. However, this needs to be sustained and built upon to increase and maintain the number of our water bodies considered healthy. These water laws protect our waterways and commit to repairing damage by 2027. Weakening them would be a terrible blow for our rivers, lakes and wetlands, and everything that depends on them. We must tell the European Commission to keep our water laws strong!
