FSC Friday: What’s in a label?

It's FSC Friday and FSC's 25th anniversary. Daniel Vince-Archer, Communications Assistant, has penned a blog to celebrate 25 years of making a difference and emphasise the collective action needed to help safeguard forests for all, forever.

September 2019

On Friday 27 September, the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) and FSC certificate holders, members, schools and organisations around the world will be celebrating FSC Friday 2019!

Recent coverage of the Amazon fires and the climate strikes led by the inspirational Greta Thunberg have demonstrated the public appetite for information about the steps that individuals and companies can take to protect and preserve our planet.

FSC Friday is an annual event designed to raise awareness about responsible forest management and how choosing products carrying the distinctive FSC ‘tick-tree’ label helps forests, people and businesses thrive. Here’s how some FSC organisations worldwide marked FSC Friday last year.

This year, the event also coincides with the 25th anniversary of FSC, making the day a cause for a double celebration! FSC International Director General Kim Carstensen will be leading the celebrations and has been looking back at 25 years of FSC making a difference.

Don’t just take our word for it though: the difference that FSC has made to forests and the wildlife that calls them home was reaffirmed recently by WWF biodiversity research that showed commercially logged tropical forests can help preserve wildlife when they are managed according to the FSC standards.

The people and businesses that live and operate in FSC-certified forests, or work with the products that come from them, have also been sharing their stories of how the FSC system has enriched their lives as part of the Together We Are FSC campaign.

You can help FSC make a difference too! Whether you’re buying for your home, your vehicle or your workplace, there are a whole host of products that started life in a forest, from books to boxes, fashion to furniture, and sheds to stationery. By choosing products that carry the FSC label wherever possible, you’re helping to ensure the world’s forests are managed responsibly.

If your retailer or supplier doesn’t offer FSC-certified options, be sure to ask them why not – and how they ensure the forest products they stock are not the result of deforestation or other activities that place forests at risk!

FSC Friday may only fall once a year but through collective action, we can all help safeguard forests for all, forever.
