Government must heed warning or risk failing to meet ambition of 25 year environment plan

12 May 2022

Reacting to the Office for Environmental Protections first report on the 25 Year Environment Plan: ‘Taking stock: protecting, restoring and improving the environment in England’, Dr Richard Benwell, CEO of Wildlife and Countryside Link, said:

“The OEP’s report reminds us that it has been 10 years since the Government promised to pass on the environment in better condition – 10 years in which biodiversity has continued to decline. Dame Glenys and her team pose a simple challenge: that overarching ambition must now be rooted in ambitious targets, an urgent delivery strategy that is prioritised across the whole government, and thorough measurement of real-world results.

“This first report is an encouraging sign of the sharp analysis we can expect from the OEP in its role as guardian of government commitments for nature. The Government must bring the same clarity to its Environmental Improvement Plan and heed the warning that it is time to turn promises into swift and coordinated practical delivery.”
