Our seas are home to many iconic species and they offer a lifeline for land dwellers too. The ocean provides over half of the air we breathe, food and medicines and has been proven to boost our mental health with just one visit.
This may explain why we like to be beside the seaside. Whether it’s rockpooling and sand castles, bird-spotting and whale-watching, or diving and surfing adventures, our coast is host to many happy memories.
As we face the prospect of a summer in lockdown, with it harder to access precious places, we’ll no doubt spend time daydreaming about our seaside memories. So why not relive them by entering our Ocean Dreaming photo competition? Join us as we celebrate the wonders of our seas and remember the good times we’ve all enjoyed there with some #OceanDreaming.
We want you to help us celebrate UK seas and help us to show MPs and government how much the ocean means to you, by sharing your #OceanDreaming photos. It could be your first surf lesson in those chilly waters, a favourite seabird, a whale or dolphin encounter, a family boat trip or watching a friendly seal. You don’t need to be a great photographer to take part. We welcome snaps from phones or cameras of anything that evokes a happy memory of enjoying the British seaside.
A judging panel of marine experts will whittle the submissions down to 14 images and three overall winners. The final 14 images will be displayed at a parliamentary event in the Autumn. The photos will help highlight the benefits that our oceans offer for people, nature and climate with MPs and support our ask of the government to do more to support the seas which support us.
