Hidden in the Haul: The true scale of bycatch
Let's End Bycatch.
Every year, thousands of marine animals are unintentionally caught and killed in UK fishing operations. This issue, known as bycatch, is one of the biggest hidden threats facing our oceans today.
Our new report, Hidden in the Haul: The true scale of bycatch, explores the extent of accidental capture happening across UK waters, and why urgent action is needed to protect marine wildlife.
Bycatch causes immense suffering to vulnerable species, pushing already threatened populations towards extinction in the UK and undermining efforts to restore healthy, resilient seas. Without stronger action, the UK risks failing to meet legally binding environmental commitments and losing some of its most iconic marine wildlife.
Urgent action is needed. That means the UK Government publishing Bycatch Action Plans with concrete measures for fishing with lower bycatch risk and improving monitoring to better understand the impact of bycatch.
