From the humblest fungus to the grandest bird of prey – £90m boost for wildlife

Today the Department for Environment will announce £90 million in funding to help safeguard hundreds of species. The money will go towards efforts to support or reintroduce animals such as birds, beavers, beetles, snails, spiders and seahorses across England. This news is heartily welcomed by Wildlife and Countryside Link, the biggest coalition of environmental organisations in England.

Richard Benwell, Chief Executive of Wildlife and Countryside Link, says:

“This is an excellent announcement that Government is stepping up to protect wildlife. From the humblest fungus that a child might find under a rock, to the grandest bird of prey soaring over the uplands, every plant and animal plays its part in Britain’s wonderful natural world. With 16% of species at risk of extinction in England, we can’t afford to lose any more.

“There’s a long way to go to reverse the decline of wildlife, but Natural England has shown that targeted investment can breathe life back into even the most degraded places – bringing joy and natural benefits to millions of people. Alongside this announcement is the chance to go further by strengthening action to tackle pollution, backing wildlife-friendly farming, and delivering an ambitious species recovery programme – so that nature can recover, and hope for a greener future can truly take root.”
