Illegal hunting, poaching, badger baiting, hare coursing, the destruction of bat roosts, the trafficking in products derived from endangered species, and the myriad of other illicit activities that constitute wildlife crime, impact the welfare of animals, threaten the conservation of populations, and potentially disrupt the stability of whole ecosystems.

Nearly 18 months on from the EU referendum there is still huge uncertainty about what Brexit will mean for so many areas of our lives. One thing we do know is that the loss of European protections could put so much of what we value in our beautiful National Parks at risk.

Some of my fondest childhood memories are of brisk walks across Dartmoor, panting after running up the highest hill, only for the expansive views to further take my breath away. A landscape with the power to invoke such emotional and sentimental responses is worth protecting. The 25-Year Environment Plan must contain measures to do this.

What I love about nature is its variety. Species evolve together and when one species evolves in a way that gives it an advantage, sooner or later another species evolves in a way that takes away that advantage. It’s this continual process of adaptation and counter-adaption that stops any one species dominating all others, leaving plenty of species for us to enjoy! But will this continue?

It seems that the only game in town at the moment is Brexit. One could forgive people for getting a little tired of this occupying so much political space. The thing is, this IS really important and although the EU (Withdrawal) Bill sounds as though it could be the driest piece of legislation on this earth, it is in fact of the most fundamental importance.
