"The UK has one of the world's richest marine environments, and we need to make sure it stays that way. As Minster for the Natural Environment and Fisheries, I was proud to be able to begin the process towards designation of Marine Conservation Zones. However, it is vital that this is just the first step towards designation of a full network of sites- one that protects the wide range of species and habitats found in our waters, that will help recover our seas to their full potential and that supports a healthy and productive environment for us all"

"We have made a start, but need to press on and establish a full and ecologically coherent network of MPAs that the UK can be proud of. It represents our best chance of stemming the degradation of our astonishing marine ecosystems, and preserving the wealth of goods and services they provide that for too long we have taken for granted."

"The designation of an Ecologically Coherent Network of Marine Protected Areas is vital if we are to protect our sea creatures and habitats, which are at serious risk – evidenced by the serious decline in catches, size of catch and indeed disappearance of some species altogether. Action at home is also vital if the UK is to be in the vanguard of vital international efforts to establish a global network of marine reserves. Such reserves offer critical sanctuaries for marine life and ecosystems, which provide a life support system for the planet but are currently in real danger."

"I was delighted when the Torbay MCZ was finally designated as part of the first tranche in November 2013. MCZs are the way forward for preserving fish stocks as well as the undersea environment. It is vital that we build on this start and deliver the full network of MPAs around our shores so that generations to come have the opportunity to enjoy, and earn a living, from our wonderful marine environment"

Rt Hon. Sir John Randall MP

"The need to protect the creatures and habitats of the UK’s seas is as paramount as ever with bird and fish populations still well below historical levels. A networkof ecologically coherent marine protected areas around our coastline will help protect these populations and allow them to flourish and be savoured by ourchildren for generations to come."

Rt Hon. Sir John Randall MP

"Both inside and outside of Parliament I have championed the need for greater protection of our marine environment for over 25 years, and am delighted to support the Marine Charter. Marine Protected Areas are a proven way of fostering much needed recovery, and ensuring that we manage our seas sustainably."
