Bioenergy in the UK

The production of bioenergy in the UK is set to increase as a source of low carbon energy for heat, power, and transport. This will have serious effects on land use, and as a consequence, on biodiversity, landscapes, historic environment and our soil and water resources.

This report was produced by Wildlife and Countryside Link, Wales Environment Link, Northern Ireland Environment Link and Scottish Environment LINK and is supported by 11 other organisations.

It calls for:
• A UK-wide assessment of bioenergy’s potential and drawbacks;
• Certification of all bioenergy schemes to ensure producers prove cuts to greenhouse gas emissions;
• Planning policies that guard against unsuitable bioenergy developments and changes in land use.
