Halting Biodiversity Loss by 2010

The UK government has made a commitment to halting biodiversity loss by 2010 as a response to the alarming loss of wildlife and habitats.

In 2006, fifteen organisations joined forces under the umbrella of the four UK Link organisations (link to Joint Links page) to produce a leaflet  - Halting Biodiversity Loss by 2010 - to explain what needs to be done to achieve this target.

The leaflet sets out 7 indicators of progress and covers 3 key elements for halting biodiversity loss:

  • Protect, enhance and aid the recovery of threatened species and habitats

  • Protect our finest wildlife sites and ensure appropriate management

  • Make space for biodiversity, i.e. make our farmland, forests, rivers and oceans more wildlife friendly places to live

Put another way, we must ‘stop the rot, protect the best and restore the rest’. We need urgent action on all of these areas now if we are to meet the 2010 target.
